The New Zealand String Quartet was formed in 1987 and comprises musicians Helene Pohl - first violin, Douglas Beilman - second violin, Gillian Ansell - viola and Rolf Gjelsten - cello. This current formation have been playing together for 19 years and established an international reputation for their dynamic performing style, eloquent communication and insightful interpretations. The Quartet is known for its imaginative programming, including cycles of composers' music from Mozart to Berg, and the development of an international audience for New Zealand music. Enjoyed by audiences in New Zealand and around the world these engaging musicians present over eighty concerts to critical acclaim each year.
